Manufacturing SPAM - Awarded ISTD Grade

The ISTD Award brief I chose was Mark My Words, in which one must outline the origin of a word or phrase. The word I chose was Spam, and throughout my book I outline how SPAM began as a low grade and long lasting meat, and the events that led to spam becoming a term used for junk e-mail. Although both are completely separate objects, their qualities are strangely similar. Throughout Manufacturing SPAM, the similarities in between SPAM and e-mail spam are highlighted using typographic expression.

Roboto Mono is used as the main body copy type, as it emanates the monospaced typography usually found online. It is used delicately throughout the book to create a larger contrast between itself and the large obnoxious super-spaced Trim Slim. Trim looms over the page, it draws attention to itself and tries to spread itself as far as possible without having much dept or worth- like spam itself.

Trim Heavy is used sparingly across the book. It is super large and appears ugly in its setting. It appears beside the delicate Roboto Mono and appears clunky and out of place, as does spamMainly pink and magenta tones are used to give a sense of sickly and unnatural SPAM. Blue typography is used to elude to a sense of internet and social media. The colour and texture of the paper stock used pays homage to the fatty texture of SPAM and the shiny texture of the can it comes in.
